Andy, I am the AFNOA Historian and a former 7th SSS navigator. There were three SSS type squadrons in SAC as best we now can find.... I have been to Maxwell to the AF HIstorical Research Agency, the National Museum of the USAF at Wright-Patterson AFB, SAC:now SAS Museum near Offutt AFB NB, Kirtland AFB & its Nuclear Museum and talked to the USAF History Offices at Bolling AFB and best I have to this date learned, is that all of these units have no offical "public" histories. So I am working on it!

I have B&W photos of "Special Squadron" C-124s in both Air Material Command and Air Force Logistic Command markings.
Both AMC & AFLC inherited the SSS C-124A's of the early 50's.

Most important: what were the dates for your dad in the C-124s?

A "Special Weapons" unit out of Kirtland named the 3079 Aviation Depot had Operational Control of the C-124A/Cs (and earlier C-54 and C-119s) that serviced SAC. The C-124 units were the interface between the early Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) later the Dept of Energy (DOE) owner of the nuclear weapons and the five/six/seven nuclear storage sites owned by the US military. The storage sites were known as NOSs or NSSs. The USAF had variously four or five, and the Army one, and the Navy variously one or two. And then there were the depots like Kelly AFB.

I'll get you a list of the other groups now working to form up our nuclear histories and send you a copy of AFNOA's Oct 2007 DR-Ahead wherein I wrote the first of the Nuclear Nav history articles... more to come.

We in AFNOA are looking for any and all that were in these "Special Weapons" units so that we can get their history recorded... before we all are dead and gone.
