Barrett, Ronald P., USAF, 1961-1999, NavBomb Retired, James Connally AFB Aviation Cadet 63-06, then Mather Radar-BombNav 63-23. Flew over 3,000 hrours (all nuclear weapons support) in the 7th Air Transport Squadron (Special) followed by the 7th Logistic Squadron (Special) 124/141s, then to C-119Gs, & C-130s as a Reservist. Taught airline aircrews for TWA and Saudi Arabian Airlines and finally flew as V/STOL test pilot.
To all Navigators, EWOs, ROs, Bombardiers,,,,,, Please tell other Navs to post on this web site and to promote AFNOA. There are now a number of great Navigator related web sites. Go to: www.james-connally.org www.usaf-nav-history.com Please contribute too ..... tell your history. The USAF has no such nav history effort. The closest we see of a USAF exhibit, is the one cabinet at the Nav flight school at AETC, Randolph AFB, Texas. WE(AFNOA) are working to correct the USAF's neglect in telling the Navigator's history. Day, William R. (Doubledrift1), Aviation Cadet, Harlingen Class 61-09. Donaldson AFB(MATS), Hunter AFB (MATS), F.E. Warren AFB (SAC Minuteman). Left active duty after five years and spend two years in AFRES as a Navigator C-119s. In civilian life was a pilot for Northwest Airlines for 33 years. Hobbies: classical violin, early church history, backcountry camping. Being a cadet at Harlingen was one of the best things that ever happened to me.

Kirkpartrick, Robert W., Major Retired, Harlingen A/C 59-13 (21 June,1959), Master Nav, C-130; From Harlingen with new wife off to Radar/Bomb at mather then 7 yrs SAC Refueling KC-97's at Malmstrom,Little Rock and Ernest Harmon. After my excape from SAC balance of time spent in C-130's at Sewart, Little Rock and CCK as RTU Instructor Nav and Stan Eval. Was in Acft shot down making low altitude airdrop at An Loc 18 April, 1972 then became briefing officer for all airdrops in SEA after the local development of high altitude/high velocity airdrops to get out of hazardous environment at AnLoc. Returned to Little Rock in the 16th, 61st TAS AWADS, and back to 62 TAS doing special projects out of the Wing Nav Office, retired June 1975 to Ks family farm till 85
moving to Central TX spent 10 years with Chrysler Airborne Systems and Raytheon at Waco, retireing in 99. Still looking for my best man A/C Bill Morgan from the next class at Harlingen. email rkirk72@yahoo.com |

I logged 1,200 hours in T-29s of the 1960s, and want to locate any fellow navigators who lost hearing on them from the screeching gyros and nav equipment. While at Mather, I served as the Route Planning Officer - flying instructor in the 3535th Navigator Training Wing. I performing duties such as celestial and dead reckoning navigation; high altitude and low level Bomb-Navigation training; ferrying high level officers cross country; testing training routes; vertical photography of targets; and chart preparation. I developed chronic Tinnitus , but was denied any disability by the VA for the ensuing hearing loss I have suffered. |

After reading a few of the recent DR AHEAD AFNOA newsletters it finally shook up my lazy brain to realize that what had been a career for me was a skill that
was no longer going to be taught nor experienced. The hair raising terror of flying in the Polar region and finding your astrotracker had pulled your heading
system off by 30 degrees while tracking the sun below the horizon would never again be experienced. Now we have hundreds of comercial passengers snoozing away
while the plane's navigation and GPS systems glide them effortlessly to their destinations. For hundreds of years navigating by referencing the sun and
stars was essential. Now our man made stars are satellites sending out electronic signals that are received and decoded by devices without human interactions.
I would like to thank all of those involved with AFNOA and particularly those who help produce the excellent newletter, DR AHEAD.
